Friendly Discussion

When learning about other religions, people often rely on their own scholars for insights. Christians consult Christian scholars about Islam, and Muslims consult Muslim scholars about Christianity. This book offers a refreshing approach by allowing adherents of each faith to explain their beliefs directly. Sunni Muslim Badru Kateregga and Christian David Shenk engage in a respectful and friendly discussion about their respective religions. Kateregga, a Ugandan with extensive academic experience, and Shenk, an American with a background in East Africa, both aim to foster understanding between their faiths. This book captures their thoughtful dialogue and highlights the key differences and shared values between Islam and Christianity.

Can Allah forgive sin?

God cannot do anything that conflicts with his nature. God is righteous, but sin has to be punished. Example of a judge who pays for the debt of 3 men. Whoever forgives somebody bears his punishment. Cheap forgiveness is impossible. What is cheap forgiveness? It is forgiveness that does not bear the punishment and cause the sinner to change.

Tauheed - God is one

Tauheed, the confession that God is One, is the touchstone of true religion. The objection of some: Christians worship a plurality of gods. If we examine the scriptures, we find that tauheed is found in the Taurat, the Psalms and the Injeel. However, man's relationship to the one God can only be restored through al-Masih.

The Story of a Murderer

Two orphaned brothers grow up in the Caucasus mountains. One is god-fearing, the other messes up his life. One night the younger brother comes home in blood-stained clothes and tells his brother that he has killed somebody.

The older brother puts on his blood-stained clothes and is arrested, judged and hanged. Before his execution he writes a letter to his brother saying that he is confident that his brother will live according to his clean clothes. When his brother receives the letter, he confesses his crime. But he is let off. He now leads an exemplary life.

We are all like the younger brother. We are worthy of hell, because we sin daily in every way. However, God does not want us to go to perdition.

Somebody has to suffer for a sin; either the person who sinned or the person who forgave. If he forgives the sin, he is ready to accept the consequences himself. This is what al-Masih did. Whoever believes in him can be saved.

Knowing God

Understanding God often involves representations through idols or personal concepts, but there's no consensus on God's nature. To truly know God, He must reveal Himself. Just as a carpenter's work, friends, letters, or a visit can reveal a person's character, God reveals Himself through al-Masih (Christ). Through al-Masih, God’s purity, love, concern for sinners, and life-giving power are fully revealed. We need this revelation through al-Masih to truly understand God.

A Heavy Debt: Who Can Pay It Back?

Once upon a time there was a king who used to disguise himself and travel throughout his realm.

Now this king had a good friend whose son was put in charge of a fort. This son squandered his money and began using funds meant for the fort with the thought that he would pay it back eventually.

One day he learned that somebody would come to check the accounts. When he went over the accounts himself, he realized that he would never be able to pay everything back. He wrote the amount on a piece of paper and added the words: “A heavy debt: Who can pay it back?” Weighed down by sorrow, he fell asleep.

After midnight, the king came to the fort in disguise. He noticed that there was still light in a room and found the young man asleep with the paper in front of him. At first he became very angry. But then the king remembered his friend and signed the paper with his own name.

When the young man woke up, he saw the name and realized that the king was going to pay his debt. In due time the king's messenger arrived and paid for the debt. This is what al-Masih did for us.
